As part of our careers programme, on December 10th, pupils visited the HS2 construction sites at Barton Green Village and Lavender Hill.
Before heading to Barton Green Village, the pupils stopped at the Balsall Common site for an enlightening talk from Ecologist Emma. She informed the pupils about the crucial work ecologists undertake to protect local wildlife. Emma explained how they safeguard species such as badgers, great crested newts, bats, otters, mink, and reptiles, ensuring that the construction has minimal impact on these animals’ habitats.
Next, the group headed to Barton Green Village, where pupils were greeted by the HS2 Community Engagement Manager Nick. The pupils learned about the construction of the Burton Green Tunnel, a 700-meter green tunnel designed to blend seamlessly into the natural landscape with extensive tree planting and new footpaths. They also learned about the innovative techniques used to minimize environmental impact, such as using excavated soil for landscaping. The pupils were particularly fascinated by the ‘piston effect’ vents designed to manage air pressure as trains enter and exit the tunnel.
Finally, the group traveled to Lavender Hill, another significant site in the HS2 project. Here, they explored the environmental mitigation measures being implemented to protect local wildlife and habitats. The pupils were impressed by the efforts to create new green spaces and reconnect wildlife corridors disrupted by the construction.
This visit not only enhanced the pupils’ knowledge of civil engineering and environmental science but also inspired many to consider careers in these fields.
