Pancake Fun On Shrove Tuesday 4th March 2025

Today, pupils had the opportunity to learn about the history of Shrove Tuesday before diving into the fun activities of making, tossing, and racing pancakes.

Firstly, pupils discovered that Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of Lent in the Christian calendar. Historically, it was a day for people to confess their sins and be “shriven” or absolved. The tradition of making pancakes arose from the need to use up rich ingredients like eggs, milk, and sugar before the 40-day fasting period of Lent.
Next, it was time for the pupils to roll up their sleeves and get cooking. They learned how to make pancake batter from scratch. Measuring ingredients, mixing the batter, and cooking the pancakes.

The pupils delighted in tossing their pancakes, launching them high into the air and catching them with impressive skill!

The highlight of the lesson was undoubtedly the pancake races, which brought an extra layer of excitement, fun and joy to the lesson!
