Plastering Taster Workshop Woodlands Campus Thursday 10th April 2025

As part of our careers programme, Year 10 &11 pupils with an interest in plastering participated in a hands-on taster session at Woodlands Campus on Thursday,10th April.

Led by current plastering students, the session introduced pupils to essential wall preparation techniques, including cleaning, priming, and applying bonding agents to ensure better adhesion. They also learned to mix different types of plaster, such as gypsum-based and lime-based, achieving the ideal consistency for smooth application.

Under expert guidance, pupils practiced handling trowels, floats, and hawks to evenly spread and refine plaster surfaces. The plastering students highlighted the importance of controlling humidity and temperature during the setting process to prevent cracks and weak finishes.

The workshop also covered techniques for correcting imperfections—filling holes, smoothing ridges, and seamlessly blending patches into existing surfaces. Additionally, key safety measures were reinforced, including proper use of PPE, adequate ventilation, and correct handling of materials to minimise risks.

This practical session provided pupils with a strong foundation in plastering principles, equipping them with valuable skills for future study and career development in the field.

The pupils had a fantastic time and took great pride in their accomplishments, gaining a boost in confidence and self-esteem!
