Castlewood School Hosts ‘Taste of the Caribbean’ Event: A Celebration of Culture and Learning
On Thursday, 24th October 2024, Castlewood School came alive with the vibrant flavors, sounds, and spirit of the Caribbean during our ‘Taste of the Caribbean’ event. This celebration highlighted the diverse cultures within our school community, allowing students and staff to explore Caribbean traditions through a delightful culinary experience.
Our carefully curated menu brought a true taste of the islands to Castlewood, with dishes that delighted all palates. Students and staff enjoyed authentic Caribbean staples like ackee and saltfish (Jamaica’s national dish), curry mutton and jerk chicken—both prepared with halal meat sourced from local butchers, ensuring everyone in our community could partake. Sides like rice and peas, fried dumplings, macaroni cheese, plantain and homemade coleslaw completed the feast. Each bite provided a sensory journey, immersing attendees in Caribbean culinary traditions.
Accompanied by the calming rhythms of reggae music, the event offered more than just food. It served as an educational experience that provided and understanding and appreciation of Caribbean heritage. Events like these encourage cultural awareness, teaching students the importance of inclusivity and respect for traditions beyond their own. It was a beautiful opportunity to bring our community together, and the afternoon was filled with laughter, learning, and a shared love for great food.
Castlewood School extends heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to making ‘Taste of the Caribbean’ such a memorable and enriching experience. Through this event, we were reminded once again of the value that diversity brings to our school and how we can all learn from each other’s unique backgrounds and stories.
